The technology industry has decided what grieving people need.

A chatbot that talks like your mother. An avatar that moves like your husband. A simulation trained on years of text messages, responding in the cadences of someone who no longer exists. Dozens of companies have built this product. Journalists have written about it with breathless wonder and righteous alarm in equal measure. And it is almost entirely the wrong conversation.

The question everyone is arguing about: "Should AI be allowed to impersonate the deceased?" The question almost no one is asking: "What does a grieving person actually need for the months and years they spend rebuilding their life after loss?"

Those are different questions. The second one has a more useful answer.


The Griefbot Industry and Its Contradictions

The companies building what researchers now call "griefbots," "deadbots," or "postmortem avatars" are solving a real problem with a method that raises serious concerns from virtually every direction.

In 2024, Hollanek and Nowaczyk-Basinska published a landmark study in Philosophy & Technology (Springer) that mapped the ethical terrain with unusual precision.
